Motivation

It’s a new year, which means it’s time to break out the traditional “get in shape/get healthy” resolution. If you’re like me, then you probably don’t stick with it for more than a few days. Well I don’t know about you, but this year is going to be different. Why? Well why not? Isn’t it about time we stuck with something?

every accomplishment starts with the decision to try

Committed? So am I! It’s a new year. A clean slate. There’s no day but today (Rent anyone?).

Confessions:

  • I got candy for Christmas. And I also went out and bought some. So much for getting rid of the candy at my house. But it was Gertrude Hawk. And it was 50% off. That has to count for something, right?
  • I continued to drink soda like it was going out of style.
  • I make up lots of excuses for not exercising. It’s too cold out. I hate treadmills. I don’t want to go alone. I’m tired. The list goes on and on.

Facts:

  • I’m lazy.
  • I’m not a big fan of vegetables, unless they’re drenched in sauce.
  • I don’t care for water.
  • I usually don’t stick with goals.

Goals:

  • Quit soda. Yes, I sound like a broken record, but I haven’t had any yet this year!  I feel like I might actually accomplish this goal!
  • Find yummy + healthy recipes to make. Bonus points for meatless meals!
  • Exercise 30 minutes a day, 3x a week.
  • Eat a more nutritious breakfast. This means less waffles + bagels, and more cereal + oatmeal.
  • Drink more water.

I feel like I’m constantly stating the same goals and not sticking to them, but for once I actually feel like I want to accomplish them. Like with any goals, if your head’s not in it 100% you’re not going to succeed. You have to want it. Then I think everything clicks into place and the goals that you slacked on in the past, become attainable. Sure, it’ll still be hard, but wanting to be successful can only make it easier.

  1. Hey, I’m ALL about celebrating victories, big or small and I think the fact you’ve not had a soda in 9 days is an achievement! I think you should tweet when you’re thinking about a soda and we can talk you down from it! Or maybe tell yourself that you have to drink half a glass of water before opening the soda. Since you don’t really like water, maybe that’ll discourage you? Lol I don’t know, just trying to come up with ways to help. Thanks for always linking up with LGP Lyss, I appreciate it!

  2. You can do it! For something like quitting soda, maybe you shouldn’t try to do it cold turkey. Ween yourself off little by little… maybe go from 5 a week to 3, or whatever. I usually replace my addictions with something else. Not drinking soda meant I needed to replace it with something other than water. I went for iced tea. At least it was a bit better, right!? :)

    • I’ve tried cold turkey and I’ve tried weening myself off it and neither seems to work! But so far so good! I’ve been replacing my sodas with iced tea too.

  3. You have some great goals. I struggle with finding things that are healthy AND easy to eat. Maybe it’s something we can all do collectively and contribute recipes somewhere.

Good luck! You can do it!

    • Yes! That’s my problem too. Everything healthy seems to involve a lot of effort or pricey ingredients. There’s got to be an easier way! I like your idea. We need to do that!

  4. You’re so right! :D

  5. I am the same way. Hate veggies, unless drenched in sauce.

    • Why must they taste so gross plain? You’d think since we’re supposed to be eating them, our bodies would like them. Although, we’re probably just used to chemically laden foods lol.

  6. A trick I learned a while back, if 30 minutes seems like an eternity, break it up. Doing some form of exercise for 10 minutes 3 times a day is the same as 30 minutes. Get creative and it will seem easier.

I like to walk but going alone is SO boring. Even with music. So I slack on that a lot. I’ve been going to the gym lately and although going alone sucks I try to pep myself up.

    • Good idea! 10 minutes of exercise seems like nothing! I think I’ll have to implement this!

Walking is pretty boring, but luckily my sister usually tags along and keeps me company! Plus, I walk through a pretty park so there’s always something nice to look at… including deer sometimes!

  7. Wow, this post sounds like it was written by me!! I hate water and veggies. I have to add that flavor stuff to water otherwise I won’t drink it. I have been doing well on the whole soda thing. I maybe have 3 or 4 a week. Which is a WHOLE lot beter than what I used to have. I did give it up for about 8 months completely but decided I could control my urges and so far so good :)

My excuse for not exercising is that it’s dark when I leave for work and dark when I come home and I don’t want to be out in the dark. And I can’t afford a gym membership. Eh. What’s a girl to do?!?

    • That flavor stuff and I are BFFs, lol. Pretty sure if it didn’t exist I would shrivel up from dehydration! I usually drink 3-7 cans of soda a week, so it’s not too bad, but I’m hoping to reduce it to 0-3. Then maybe none at all!

  8. I’m right there with you on the soda. I gave it up 2 years ago (caffeine too) and stuck with it for a year, then things got really busy juggling my business and full-time job, so it became habit again. I haven’t had one all this week, and the headaches finally stopped. Last time, once I stuck with it for a month, I didn’t crave it any more. I was even able to have one occasionally as a treat, and not want more after that. We can do it!!

    • Years ago, before college, I barely drank any soda. Then I was introduced to the college cafeteria with it’s numerous soda options. It was all downhill from there. You’re right, we can do it!
